Heliconia rostrata, commonly known as Hanging Lobster Claw or False Bird of Paradise, is a stunning tropical plant known for its vibrant and unique flower clusters. To keep your Heliconia rostrata thriving and producing its striking blooms, here’s a care description with key guidelines:
Light:
Heliconia rostrata thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, it’s best to provide filtered sunlight or partial shade, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Temperature:
This plant prefers warm temperatures and is not tolerant of cold or frost. Keep it in an environment with temperatures consistently above 60°F (15°C). Avoid exposure to cold drafts or sudden temperature drops.
Watering:
Provide regular and consistent moisture to your Heliconia rostrata. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain from the pot or soil. During periods of active growth, ensure that the plant doesn’t dry out completely between waterings.
Humidity:
Heliconias thrive in high humidity environments. If you’re growing the plant indoors, consider placing it in a room with higher humidity or using a humidity tray to provide extra moisture. Regular misting can also help maintain the desired humidity level.
Soil:
Use a well-draining, fertile soil mix that retains moisture without becoming soggy. A mix that includes peat moss, perlite, and organic matter works well for Heliconia rostrata.
Fertilization:
During the active growing season (spring through early fall), feed your Heliconia rostrata with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Use a fertilizer formulated for tropical plants or one that has a higher potassium content to promote flowering.
Pruning:
Remove any dead or yellowing leaves as they appear. Pruning can also be done to remove spent flower spikes and encourage new growth.
Mulching:
Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant can help conserve soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Pests and Diseases:
Monitor your Heliconia rostrata for signs of pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat any infestations promptly with appropriate insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
Container:
If growing your Heliconia rostrata in a container, choose a pot that provides enough space for the plant’s growth. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Support:
As the plant grows, it may need support for its tall flower spikes. Consider staking or tying the spikes to prevent them from bending or breaking.
Propagation:
Heliconia rostrata can be propagated through division. During the plant’s dormant season, carefully separate the rhizomes (underground stems) with a sharp, clean knife and replant them in well-prepared soil.
By following these care instructions and providing the appropriate conditions, you can enjoy the exotic beauty of Heliconia rostrata and its eye-catching flower clusters in your garden or indoor space.
Shipping:
To ensure the safe delivery of your plant, we take great care in securely wrapping it. Typically, if you choose Priority shipping, most orders reach their destinations within 1-3 business days after shipping, but there might be occasional delays beyond our control, as USPS cannot guarantee exact delivery times.

Replacements and refunds:
We take great pride in our packaging to ensure a safe delivery. Please be aware that receiving a plant with a few yellow or dead leaves, especially when shipping to extreme climates, is entirely normal as these are live plants and sometimes, they do get stressed with the shipping process. In the rare event that your plant arrives damaged or in poor health, kindly notify us within 24 hours of USPS delivery and provide at least one image of the plant in its original packaging showing the issue. We may ask you to give the plant extra care and time to recover, or we may offer a replacement or refund. However, please note that we cannot take responsibility for plants if 24 hours have passed since USPS delivery. We are more than happy to assist with any questions you may have regarding plant care.
